Target Overview | Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV, RSV), also known as Human orthopneumovirus is a single-RNA virus belonging to the genus od Orthopneumovirus, the family of Pneumoviridae. It is a common respiratory virus that can infect people of all ages., as well as the major cause of lower respiratory tract infections and hospital visits during infancy and childhood. HRSV is a linear negative-sense RNA, medium-sized enveloped virus. The genome of HRSV encodes for 11 proteins including structural and non-structural. The virus of RSV is enveloped by lipid bilayer, which comes from the plasma membrane of the host. It contains three kinds of surface glycoproteins, i.e. attachment protein G, fusion protein F and small hydrophobic sh protein. They are separated from each other and can be regarded as "spikes" protruding from virus ions. F and G lipoproteins are the only two kinds of lipoproteins targeting cell membrane, which are highly conserved in RSV isolates. According to the reactivity of the virus to G and F glycoprotein, HRSV was divided into two antigenic subgroups A and B. Among them, subtype B refers to the asymptomatic virus strains experienced by most people, while, subtype A strains are often the dominant type with more severe symptoms in most outbreaks. |
