Target Information

Target Name Rotavirus
Related Disease Diarrhoeal disease
Target Overview Rotavirus is a double-stranded RNA viruse belonging to the genus of Rotavirus, the family of Reoviridae. There are ten species of the genus Rotavirus, Rotavirus A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I and J, among which Rotavirus A is the most common species causing more than 90% of rotavirus infections in humans. Rotavirus consists of six viral proteins (VP1, VP2, VP3, VP4, VP6 and VP7) and six non structural proteins (NSPs), which are produced only in cells infected by rotavirus, that are NSP1, NSP2, NSP3, NSP4, NSP5 and NSP6. At least six of the 12 proteins encoded by the rotavirus genome bind to RNA. The role of these proteins in rotavirus replication is not fully understood; their functions are believed to be related to RNA synthesis and packaging in viruses, mRNA transfer to genomic replication sites, and mRNA translation and regulation of gene expression.
