| Target Overview | Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a partially double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the genus of Orthohepadnavirus, the family of Hepadnaviridae, which is the main cause of the hepatitis B, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and pancreatic cancer. The HBV consist of an outer lipid membrane and an icosahedral nucleocapsid core composed of proteins. The nucleocapsid is surrounded by viral DNA and a DNA polymerase that has retroviral like reverse transcriptase activity. The outer membrane contains embedded proteins related to virus binding and entry of susceptible cells. The virus is one of the smallest enveloped animal viruses. Its ion diameter is 42 nm, but it has pleomorphism, including filamentous and spherical nucleoless bodies. These particles are not infectious and consist of lipids and proteins that form part of the surface of the virus, named as surface antigens (HBsAg), which are overproduced in the life cycle of the virus. |
