Target Overview The human Astrovirus belongs to the genus Mamastrovirus, and the family of Astroviridae that was discovered by electron microscopes following an outbreak of diarrhea in humans. In addition to humans, astroviruses are hosted by mammal and bird species. Astrovirus is a kind of icosahedral virus with a diameter of 28-35 nm. It has a typical five point or six point star surface structure when observed under an electron microscope. The third group of non enveloped viruses is composed of astroviridae, Parvoviridae and Caliciviridae. Its genome is composed of sense single stranded RNA. There is a non segmented, single stranded, sense RNA genome in a non enveloped icosahedral capsid. Human Astrovirus has been studied in many ways as an important cause of gastroenteritis in children all over the world.
