IgA, also known as immunoglobulin A, is the main antibody at the surface of mucosal that plays a critical role in regulating the immune response. In general, IgA consists of two subtypes, IgA1 and IgA2. IgA2 has a longer amino-acid hinge region than IgA1, and IgA1 is the most abundant isotype in plasma, bone marrow and spleen. IgA has three isoforms, including monomeric, dimeric and secretory forms. The dimeric and secretory form of IgA can be usually found at mucosal surfaces. Monomeric and dimeric IgA are prone to bind to the IgA receptor.
