| Target Overview | Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a small virus belonging to the genus of Hepacivirus, the family Flaviviridae. It is an enveloped and positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus, and the main cause of hepatitis C and some cancers such as liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma, abbreviated HCC) and lymphomas in humans. HCV particles are composed of lipid membrane and RNA. Two kinds of virus envelope glycoproteins, E1 and E2, were embedded in the lipid envelope. NS4 is an unstructured protein of virus, which consists of NS4A and NS4B. The virus has a high replication rate and produces about 1 trillion particles per day in infected individuals. HCV is divided into six genotypes (1-6), each of which has several subtypes. The advantage and distribution of HCV genotypes are different all over the world. Genotypes play an important role in determining the potential response and treatment time of interferon therapy. Compared with other genotypes (2, 3, 5 and 6), genotypes 1 and 4 showed less response to interferon therapy. |
